| What is distillation? |
| Distillation is the process of separating, concentrating or purifying a liquid by boiling it, and then condensing the resulting vapor into a cleansed liquid form. Used for the production of some alcoholic liquors, including whiskey and vodka, distillation is also a popular water purification method. Taken from nature’s Hydrologic Cycle (or water cycle), distillation naturally occurs when the sun heats the water on the earth’s surface. As this water evaporates and rises to form clouds, a host of contaminants are left behind. As the upper atmosphere drops in temperature, the vapors cool and convert back to water in the form of water droplets. When the droplets return to the earth’s surface as rain or snow, the cycle repeats itself – providing an ongoing process for cleaning the earth’s water. The Hydrologic Cycle is also often referred to as nature’s air purification system because as the water droplets fall toward the earth in the form of rain or snow, they collect dirt and air pollutant particles and carry them to the ground, cleaning the air as they go along.
